Easy Tomatillo Sauce

This easy tomatillo sauce recipe is a flavorful and versatile sauce that can be used in a variety of Mexican dishes. It is made with fresh tomatillos, serranos, jalapenos, garlic, and cilantro, which are blended together to create a tangy and slightly spicy sauce.

It can be used as a topping for tacos, enchiladas, or burritos or as a dip for chips. This recipe is quick and easy to make and can be easily adjusted to suit your taste preferences.

Peel and remove the husks from the tomatillos and rinse under cool water. In a medium pot, add 8 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Add the onion, serranos, jalapenos, and tomatillos in the boiling water,  then bring to a simmer and cook until the tomatillos are slightly yellow and fairly soft but not falling apart, 8 to 10 minutes.

Remove from heat a let it cool slightly. Transfer the jalapenos, serrano, smashed garlic, and kosher salt to a blender or food processor; reserve the cooking water. Blend for 5 seconds. Add the tomatillos and blend to a rough texture.

Blend in the cilantro and blend until smooth, adding a few tablespoons of the cooking water if the salsa is too thick. Stir in lime juice if using. Taste for seasoning and adjust with kosher salt if necessary. Let it sit for 30 minutes to let the flavors develop.

👀Note:  We don't add any extra water; instead, we adjust the consistency of the Tomatillo salsa with lime juice; you can use the cooking water if you prefer.

    Ingredients
      

    • ½ kg (1 ½ pounds) whole tomatillos , husked and rinsed
    • ½ small onion
    • 2 Jalapeño peppers stemmed
    • 2 serrano peppers stemmed
    • 2 small garlic cloves , smashed
    • 1 samll bunch Cilantro leaves , stems removed
    • 1-½ teaspoons kosher salt , adjust to taste
    • juice from ½ lime
    • cooking water if needed

    Instructions

    Notes

    How to store: Store the tomatillo sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. However, if you add avocado, it will last for up two days. To avoid oxidation, wrap the food in plastic wrap.
