What is Ghee
?

Ghee, also known as clarified butter, is a staple in Indian cuisine and has been used for centuries as a cooking oil and flavor enhancer.

The traditional process of making ghee involves simmering butter and separating the milk solids from the liquid fat, resulting in a rich, nutty-tasting oil high in healthy fats.

Ghee has several health benefits, making it a popular alternative to cooking oils, such as vegetables or canola. The following are some of the key health benefits of ghee:

  • Rich in healthy fats: Ghee is mainly saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, which are important for heart health and can help lower cholesterol levels.
  • Good for digestion: Ghee is known for its digestive properties, as it can help soothe the digestive system and relieve symptoms of indigestion.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Ghee is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great option for those who suffer from chronic inflammation or autoimmune conditions.
  • High smoke point: Ghee has a high smoke point, which means it can be used for high-heat cooking without breaking down and producing harmful byproducts.
  • Versatile cooking oil: Ghee can be used for various cooking methods, including frying, sautéing, baking, and roasting. It also has a rich, buttery flavor that can be used to enhance the flavor of a wide range of dishes.

In conclusion, ghee is a healthy and versatile cooking oil that has been a staple in Indian cuisine for centuries. Try ghee if you want a heart-healthy alternative to other cooking oils. You will be pleasantly surprised by its rich flavor and health benefits.

How to Make Ghee

Note: The full instructions are provided in the recipe card below.

Making ghee at home is a simple process that requires just one ingredient. Here's how to make ghee in four easy steps: Select high-quality unsalted butter. If possible, aim for organic, grass-fed butter, resulting in the best flavor.

Place the butter in a saucepan and set the heat to medium. Allow the butter to melt completely, occasionally stirring to ensure it doesn't stick to the pan. Once the butter has melted, you will notice a layer of foam forming on top. Skim this foam off with a spoon and discard it.

Reduce the heat to low and let the butter simmer until the solids settle at the pan's bottom and the top becomes clear. This should take about 10-15 minutes.

Be careful not to burn the solids, as this will affect the flavor of the ghee. Once the solids have settled, turn off the heat and allow the ghee to cool for a few minutes. Then, carefully pour the ghee through a fine-mesh strainer into a heatproof glass jar. Discard the solids left in the strainer.

Your homemade ghee is now ready to use! Store it in an airtight container in the pantry or refrigerator, and use it instead of other cooking oils. Enjoy its rich, nutty flavor in a variety of dishes.
