Unlike American-style hot chocolate, which is often made with cocoa powder, the Mexican version relies on melting these chocolate tablets into milk or water.

The result is a rich, foamy drink that can sometimes include a hint of spice. More traditional preparations commonly use water, while many restaurants prefer to use milk.

This Chocolate Caliente Mexicano recipe is easy, quick, and made with only 3 ingredients. It has the classic warm, cozy flavor of traditional Mexican hot chocolate.

It's perfect for cold days, holiday mornings, or whenever you want a simple, comforting cup of authentic Mexican chocolate.☕

Ingredients You'll Need

Note: See the recipe card for quantities.

  • Whole Milk: Works as the base of the drink and helps melt the chocolate smoothly.
  • Heavy cream: Adds extra richness, making the hot chocolate thicker and creamier.
  • Abuelita Mexican chocolate (or Ibarra tablets): Provides the classic Mexican hot chocolate flavor with notes of cinnamon and warm spices.

How to Make Chocolate Caliente Mexicano

Note: Full instructions are provided in the recipe card below.

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil while whisking constantly. You can serve it right away, or keep it hot in a thermal container.
  2. If you keep it in the container, shake it well before serving. The container can keep it hot for about 2 to 8 hours, depending on its quality. Check the temperature every hour. If it gets too cool, heat it back up to at least 145°F/62°C.

Hint: : Whisk constantly as it heats-this keeps the chocolate from burning on the bottom of the pot.

Storage

Storage: Refrigerate leftover hot chocolate in an airtight container for up to 8 hours. Warm gently over medium-low heat and whisk or blend to restore the foam.

Camila's Tips & Variations

  • Use milk for a creamier drink: Traditional Mexican hot chocolate is often made with water, but using whole milk creates a richer, smoother texture.
  • Chop the chocolate tablets: Roughly chopping the Abuelita or Ibarra tablets helps them melt faster and more evenly.
  • Add a touch of spice: For a classic kick, add a pinch of ground cinnamon or a tiny dash of cayenne powder.
  • Blend for extra foam: Froth is key in authentic Mexican hot chocolate. A molinillo creates the best texture, but a blender or immersion blender works beautifully too.
  • Make it extra chocolatey: Stir in a small handful of chocolate chips or a spoonful of cocoa powder if you want a deeper chocolate flavor.
  • Try a café-style version: Add a shot of espresso or strong coffee to turn it into a Mexican mocha.
  • Dairy-free option: Swap the milk for oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk-each adds its own unique flavor.
  • Add orange zest: A bit of fresh orange zest brings out the cinnamon notes and gives a festive twist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this with water instead of milk?

Yes. Water creates a more traditional, lighter-style Mexican hot chocolate, while milk gives it a creamier texture.

Can I make it without a molinillo?

Absolutely. A blender or immersion blender will create plenty of foam, which is key for authentic hot chocolate mexicano.

Is this hot chocolate very sweet?

La Abuelita chocolate is naturally sweetened, so the drink has a balanced, cozy sweetness. You can add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter.
