It's a simple way to enjoy a café-style cappuccino without an espresso machine or steamed milk.

This homemade instant cappuccino mix recipe is inspired by Brazilian-style cappuccino and uses simple pantry ingredients to recreate a smooth, foamy texture with better flavor control and a lower cost than store-bought versions.
By sifting the ingredients and using baking soda for foam, this recipe creates a rich, creamy drink that's quick to prepare and easy to enjoy at home.
Ingredients You'll Need
Note: See the recipe card for quantities.
- Powdered milk: Creates a creamy base and gives the cappuccino its smooth, milky flavor without fresh milk.I use Nido dry milk, but any powdered milk will work.
- Instant coffee: Provides the coffee flavor and allows the cappuccino to dissolve quickly when mixed with hot milk or water.I recommend using NESCAFÉ Clásico Instant Coffee, Dark Roast.
- Chocolate powder (50% cocoa): Adds depth and a light chocolate note that balances the coffee's bitterness without overpowering it.
- Ground cinnamon: Enhances the aroma and adds warmth, giving the cappuccino a classic, comforting flavor.
- Baking soda: Helps create foam when mixed with hot liquid, giving the cappuccino a lighter, creamier texture.
- Sugar or sweetener (optional): Allows you to adjust the sweetness to taste or keep the mix unsweetened and sweeten each cup individually.
How to Make Instant Cappuccino Mix
Note: The full instructions are provided in the recipe card below.
- Place all the ingredients in a fine-mesh sieve set over a bowl.
- Sift the ingredients together, pressing and rubbing the instant coffee granules between your fingers until very fine.
- Continue pressing until the coffee granules pass through the sieve. Some coffee granules and sugar may remain; keep rubbing and pressing until no large granules remain. Add anything left in the sieve to the bowl and mix well.
- Alternatively, add all the ingredients to a food processor and pulse until finely blended. Transfer the cappuccino powder to a clean, dry, airtight container.
- To prepare the cappuccino, add 2 level tablespoons of the cappuccino powder to a cup. Pour in 120 ml (½ cup) very hot milk. Stir well and serve immediately.
Hint: Do not skip sifting. Press the instant coffee granules through the sieve until they are very fine.
This step helps the cappuccino dissolve evenly, creates better foam, and prevents gritty coffee pieces in the final drink.
Alternatively, you can pulse all the ingredients in a food processor until finely blended.
Storage & Make Ahead
Store the cappuccino powder in a clean, dry, airtight container at room temperature. Keep it away from heat and moisture to prevent clumping.
When stored properly, it keeps well for up to 2 months. Always use a dry spoon when scooping to maintain freshness and texture.
Camila's Tips & Variations
- Sift for best results: Sifting all the ingredients is key for a smooth mix and good foam. Press the instant coffee granules through the sieve until very fine, or pulse everything briefly in a food processor.
- Adjust sweetness: Use more or less sugar to suit your taste. Turbinado sugar adds a light caramel note, while white sugar keeps the flavor clean.
- Chocolate choice: Chocolate powder 50% gives a milder, balanced flavor. For a deeper coffee taste, use unsweetened 100% cocoa powder.
- Milk options: This mix works best with hot whole milk, but you can use low-fat milk or plant-based milk for a lighter drink.
- Flavor variations: Add a pinch of nutmeg, vanilla powder, or a little extra cinnamon to customize the cappuccino.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make cappuccino mix without baking soda?
Yes. Baking soda is used to create foam. If you leave it out, the cappuccino will still taste good but won't be foamy.
Can I use hot water instead of milk?
Yes. Hot water works well and creates foam, but hot milk will give you a creamier cappuccino.
Does baking soda change the flavor?
No. When mixed properly, baking soda helps with foam and does not affect the taste.
How sweet is this cappuccino mix?
This recipe is lightly sweetened with ¼ cup sugar. You can adjust the sweetness when serving by adding more sugar to each cup, if desired.
