It offers a richer, more customizable alternative to store-bought packets, with optional additions like cinnamon, cornstarch for thickness, or chocolate chips for extra richness.

This homemade hot cocoa mix recipe uses natural unsweetened cocoa, a blend of sugars, and optional milk powder to create a rich, creamy cocoa that dissolves easily and tastes better than packaged mixes.

It's easy to customize with spices like cinnamon or vanilla, making it a simple, good-quality option for everyday use or gifting.

Ingredients You'll Need

Note: Full ingredients and amounts are listed in the recipe card below.

  • Hershey's natural unsweetened cocoa powder: Provides the main chocolate flavor and gives the hot cocoa its rich, classic taste without added sweetness.
  • Granulated sugar: Sweetens the cocoa and balances the natural bitterness of the cocoa powder.
  • Light brown sugar: Adds subtle caramel notes and depth, making the cocoa taste warmer and more rounded.
  • Nido Dry milk powder (optional): Adds creaminess and helps the cocoa mix dissolve smoothly in hot milk or water.
  • Vanilla (optional): Enhances the chocolate flavor.
  • Kosher salt: Enhances the flavor.
  • Ground cinnamon (optional): Adds gentle warmth and depth without overpowering the chocolate.

How to Make Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

Note: The full instructions are provided in the recipe card below.

  1. Put all ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until no visible milk powder is left. Store in a seal-proof container for up to two months.
  2. Use about 2 to 2-½ tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix in an 8-ounce mug, pour in hot water or milk, stir well, and enjoy!

Hint: For extra depth and a subtle caramelized flavor, I recommend lightly toasting the milk powder.

Storage, Make Ahead, & Freezing

Storage: Store the hot cocoa mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 months, away from heat and moisture.

Make Ahead: This cocoa mix is perfect for making ahead since it's fully dry. Prepare it in advance and keep it ready for quick cups of hot cocoa anytime.

Freezing: Freezing is not recommended.

Camila's Tips & Variations

  • Use good cocoa: I used Hershey's natural unsweetened cocoa powder for a classic, smooth chocolate flavor.
  • Toast the milk powder: For extra depth and a light caramel flavor, I recommend lightly toasting the milk powder before mixing.
  • Milk or water: Prepare the cocoa with hot milk for a richer cup, or hot water for a lighter, store-bought-style cocoa.
  • Adjust sweetness: Add more or less sugar to suit your taste, especially if using very dark cocoa.
  • Flavor twists: Add a pinch of cinnamon or freshly grated nutmeg for a warm variation.
  • Make it thicker: Stir in 5 teaspoons of cornstarch for a thicker, creamier cocoa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this hot cocoa or hot chocolate?

This is hot cocoa, made with cocoa powder. Hot chocolate is made with melted chocolate.

Can I make this without milk powder?

Yes. The mix will still taste great. Use hot milk instead of water for a creamier cup.

How much mix do I use per cup?

Use 2 to 2½ tablespoons of hot cocoa mix per 1 cup (240 ml) of hot milk or water.

Can I use a different cocoa powder?

Yes. Any natural unsweetened cocoa powder works, but Hershey's gives a classic, familiar flavor.
