  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • cup water (or 100% apple cider juice)
  • ¼ tablespoons packed brown sugar Adjust sugar to taste if using apple cider to avoid excess sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pounds (about 3 to 4) Braeburn apples, peeled, cored, halved, and cut into ½-inch-thick wedges, then halved crosswise

Instructions
 

  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Whisk in water (or apple cider), brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Add apples and lemon juice and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat.
  • Cover and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Uncover and cook for 5–7 minutes more, until apples are tender and the sauce thickens. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Serve warm or refrigerate for up to 2 days.
