Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat and saute the rice until it crackles when stirred about 3 minutes. Add the hot water and bring it to a full boil—season with salt. Cover with a tight-fitting lid. Cook until all the water has been absorbed and small holes appear in the rice, about 7 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and let the rice sit, still covered, for an additional 3 minutes. This lets the residual steam continue cooking the rice, resulting in a fluffy texture. Once the 3 minutes have passed, uncover the saucepan and use a fork to delicately fluff the rice. If you notice that the rice isn't as tender and fluffy as desired, you can allow it to sit for an extra 2 minutes or as needed before fluffing. The grains should be separate and tender. Serve your perfectly cooked white rice as a delicious side dish or base for your favorite meals.

Notes

How to Store & Re-heat
  • To store: Allow it to cool to room temperature, then transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Make sure to refrigerate the rice promptly after cooking to prevent bacterial growth.
  • To reheat: You can use a microwave or stovetop. For the microwave, place the rice in a microwave-safe dish, add a splash of water, cover it with a damp paper towel, and microwave on high for 1-2 minutes until heated through. For the stovetop, add a splash of water or broth to the rice in a saucepan, cover with a lid, and heat over medium-low heat, occasionally stirring until heated through.
Make-Ahead
White rice can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for later use. Cook the rice according to the recipe, then allow it to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer the rice to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. When you're ready to serve, you can reheat the rice using a microwave or stovetop method.
How to Freeze
To freeze, cook the rice according to the recipe and allow it to cool to room temperature. Next, transfer the rice to an airtight, freezer-safe container or freezer bag, making sure to press out any excess air. Label the container with the date and contents and place it in the freezer. The rice can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months.
When ready to use the frozen rice, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight or use the defrost setting on your microwave. Reheat the rice using a microwave or stovetop method, adding a splash of water or broth to prevent drying.
