Ingredients

  • cup (5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon) unsalted butter, at room temperature (I used Smart Balance Original and omitted the salt)
  • ½ cup firmly packed light brown sugar or dark
  • 1 Tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 ¾ cups Nutella or other chocolate hazelnut spread , divided
  • 2 large eggs plus 1 egg yolk , room temperature
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour , spooned and leveled

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Take a small amount of softened butter and spread it evenly over the bottom and sides of the 9x9 inch baking dish. Sprinkle a small amount of flour over the buttered dish, then tilt the dish to distribute the flour evenly. Turn the dish upside down over the sink or trash can to remove any excess flour. Alternatively, you can line the baking pan with parchment paper and spray it with cooking spray.
  • Cream the sugar, salt, and butter in a large bowl with an electric hand mixer until fluffy. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. With the mixer running on low speed, add the eggs and vanilla extract. Beat on medium-high speed until well combined. Then add 1 cup of Nutella and mix until everything is smooth and fluffy, scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.
  • Add the flour and mix until fully combined; do not overmix. If you're using chocolate chips or nuts, gently fold them in. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Drop spoonfuls of the remaining ¾ cup of Nutella on top of the batter. Using a skewer or knife to swirl the Nutella through the brownie batter creates a marbled effect. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Cut the brownies into squares and serve them alone or with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

How to Store & Reheat
To store: Nutella brownies, ensure they are completely cooled to room temperature before storing them in an airtight container. Brownies can be stored at room temperature for 3-4 days. Alternatively, you can store them in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 3 months. If freezing, wrap the brownies tightly in plastic and aluminum foil or place them in a freezer-safe container. Thaw them in the refrigerator before serving, then reheat them in the oven or microwave.
To reheat: Nutella brownies, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and place the brownies on a baking sheet. If you prefer warm and gooey brownies, microwave a single serving for 10-15 seconds until heated. Heat them in the oven for about 5-10 minutes or until they are warm and slightly crisp on top for a crispy crust. Avoid overheating them in the microwave or oven, as this can cause them to become dry and overcooked. Enjoy your freshly reheated Nutella brownies with a scoop of ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra indulgent treat.
How to Make Ahead
You can make Nutella brownies ahead of time to save time and effort. You can make the brownie batter up to 24 hours in advance and store it in the refrigerator until you're ready to bake. Be sure to cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap to prevent the batter from drying out or absorbing odors from the fridge. When you're ready to bake, let the batter come to room temperature before pouring it into a greased baking dish, adding the Nutella swirl, and baking as directed. You can also bake the brownies ahead of time and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer until you're ready to serve. To reheat, follow the instructions mentioned earlier.
How to Freeze
To freeze Nutella brownies, let them cool completely to room temperature, then cut them into desired serving sizes. Wrap each individual brownie in plastic wrap, then place them in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag. Be sure to label the container or bag with the date so you can track how long they've been frozen. You can freeze Nutella brownies for up to three months. To thaw, take the brownies out of the freezer and let them sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can thaw them in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, reheat them in the oven or microwave, following the instructions mentioned earlier.
